What’s the difference between Vegan and Vegetarian?

January 5th, 2022

It can be confusing at times. Just what exactly are a vegan and a vegetarian? We’ve got the answers for you in case you’re thinking of changing your diet. Many people do change their diets for health, allergies, religious reasons, economic reasons, you name it. But let’s break it down. According to Harvard, vegetarians are people who do not eat meat, poultry, or seafood. Some take it further and do not eat any dairy products or eggs. A vegan is someone who strictly eats no meat, dairy, or anything made from animals. It’s about animals and having a healthier planet. Here are tips and vegan recipes from PETA to give you more information about becoming a vegan. Whether you are thinking of becoming a vegetarian or a vegan, it’s always best to check with your chosen doctor to determine what will work best for you. At NoHo Senior Arts Colony, we support everyone looking to make their lifestyle healthier. Let us know how we can help!

Warm & fuzzy ways to stay warmer this winter

January 2nd, 2022

Even though we’re in Southern California, it gets darn chilly here during the winter months and at night. Staying warm is important — at home and outdoors. To stay extra cozy at home, be sure to use adjust your thermostat in your spacious residence at NoHo Senior Arts Colony. Electric blankets and microwavable heating pads are awesome too. Another way we love to stay warm is to cuddle with a pet. They’ll love it too! A fresh cup of coffee or tea is also an easy way to warm up quickly. Be sure to watch the caffeine after lunch though. There are lots of delicious herbal teas that can do the trick. Another simple trick is to layer clothes and wear thick socks. Before venturing outside, check the weather so you can wear a decent jacket, scarf, and/or beanie to stay warmer. CNN has some more tips to keep you nice and cozy.

Staying healthier during the holidays

December 27th, 2021

Celebrating the holidays is important. We all need time to appreciate this festive season and all the love and joy it brings. Many times it’s very easy to overindulge. There’s delicious food of all kinds everywhere! But at NoHo Senior Arts Colony, we’ve found some good tips from our friends at Forbes and the CDC to help us all have a healthier but still festive holiday season. A few of the highlights include portion control. You can enjoy those sweet and savory dishes but try to make your portions smaller. You’ll still get to enjoy the delicious flavors without feeling like you need a nap. Another great tip is to drink plenty of water. Water helps our bodies process everything easier. Taking a short walk every day is also a good tip. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to take a healthy walk (make sure you’re wearing a warm coat and apparel). If you’re able, a light workout with light weights is also helpful. Your mind can also use a rest so if you can, fit in a 10-minute mediation to clear your mind. Make sure to check with your medical professional about any changes to your diet or exercise routine. Just remember to keep your holidays light and bright!

The meaning behind Veterans Day

November 11th, 2021

Memorial Day’s purpose is to honor military members who have died, while Veterans Day recognizes the service of ALL America’s veterans (those who have served or are serving.) It’s an important day to reflect on the brave men, women, and families who have shown such courage and provided us with a real example of bravery. Veterans day has a long history going all the way back to 1918. Where on “the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as the Great War.” It became a Federal holiday in 1938. Every year at 11am on November 11th, a wreath is laid at the tomb of the unknown soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. On behalf of everyone at NoHo Senior Arts Colony, thank you to all veterans past and present for serving our nation.
