At NoHo Seniors Arts Colony, we take play very seriously. It’s very important to incorporate some fun time on a regular basis. Play could be playing golf, working on a puzzle, playing catch with your grandkids at the park, watching your favorite comedy movie, and the list goes on and on. For starters, your brain will love when you play more. It helps to improve memory function, social connections and relieve stress. Playing also helps to inspire new ideas. It’s stimulating. Maybe you try a class or two just for the fun of it and discover a new passion for knowledge. Relationships also benefit when we relax, are playful, and connect. “Dad” jokes and puns are such icebreakers and an easy way to bring a smile to someone’s face. How about having an impromptu dance party in your apartment with your grandkid’s favorite music, or better yet, introduce them to some of your favorite happy songs.  Learn more about the benefits of regular playing. And be sure to ask us about our current event and activity calendar at NoHo Senior Arts Colony. Play is child’s play here.

Being good to yourself and staying motivated in all areas takes practice. An easy way to give your day a positive boost is through positive affirmations. What are they? Glad you asked. Positive affirmations are positive statements that you say to yourself or say out loud to yourself. Even though it seems summer is almost over, Southern California is going to experience some extreme heat this week. At NoHo Senior Arts Colony, we care about your health and comfort. Here are some quick reminders to keep you feeling safe, cool, and confident to beat the heat. First, pay attention to the local weather report and/or check The Weather Channel. Following them on your social media apps is also an easy way to get reminders about excessive heat or less than healthy air conditions. Another tip is to keep your blinds drawn during the hottest part of the day, which tends to be around 3 pm. Make sure to utilize the air conditioning in your apartment. For a quick bit of refreshment, take a dip in our resort-inspired swimming pool. Keep plenty of water on hand. Drinking around 6-8 glasses is the norm. Click here for more tips.

Native American documentaries

August 26th, 2022

native culture NoHo Senior Arts Colony aug 2022

Documentaries are an easy way to learn more about everything, including history. There are several we recommend.

PBS’ NATIVE AMERICA premiered in 2018 and is a 4-part series that goes back and features America’s first peoples and their connections to the world today.

Ken Burns’ The West features information about the settlers who drove Native Americans out of their cherished lands. It gives context for why things happened.

Sitting Bull: A Stone In My Heart is a unique window into the heart of one of Native America’s greatest chiefs. It is told in his own words from letters throughout his life. You can find this documentary on Amazon Prime Video.

The list goes on and on to learn about Native American culture. One venue not too far from NoHo Senior Arts Colony is The Autry Museum of The American West. It has a meaningful collection of Native American culture and history to experience. At NoHo Senior Arts Colony, we believe the more we learn about history in all of its facets, the more we can connect to each other as human beings.
