May 3rd, 2022

When we’re little, we’re taught to tie our shoes, read and write, ride a bike, etc. But one of the most important things that affect our daily lives is our feelings. There was never really a way to understand our feelings. Researcher and best-selling author Brene Brown has been doing extensive research for decades about feelings and is here with a new special, audible version, and book called Atlas of the Heart. Here she easily and in her signature down-to-earth way explains more about our feelings and the results of those feelings. The information she shares helps us embrace our own humanity, reframe how to deal with our emotions, and connect with others in more enlightened ways. At NoHo Senior Arts Colony, we can’t get enough of her! Rising Strong is also one of our favorite Brene Brown books. No matter what book you choose to read written by her, there will be lots of aha moments and motivational insights! Happy reading/watching!

Learn a new hobby: How about pottery?

April 28th, 2022

Remember that famous scene in the movie Ghost where Demi Moore is at her potter’s wheel? Well, making pottery is still very popular. In fact, there’s a competition show across that pond called The Great Pottery Throw Down on HBO Max that puts potters against each other to win mini and maxie challenges and ultimately go for the crown. But working with clay doesn’t have to be competitive at all. Quite the opposite. Making pottery is a great way to still be creative and problem solve only in a more tranquil environment. Even watching those pottery-making videos is peaceful. We even found an online beginner’s guide. There are some local shops in the area if you are thinking of dabbling in making pottery and gaining new skills. Bermon Ceramic Arts right here in North Hollywood has been teaching people to work clay for over 50 years. The Potters Nook in Burbank also sounds like a laid-back and cool place to try a new hobby. It sounds fun! When you live at NoHo Senior Arts Colony, you’ll discover new talents and inspirations you never knew you had.

We could name a hundred reasons why NoHo Senior Arts Colony is an incredible community for those independent folks who are 62+. But for time’s sake, we’ll narrow it down to just 3.

Unlike a house, we’ll take care of all the maintenance and repairs of your sophisticated apartment residence with modern features. You’ll have more time to live your life without any time-consuming chores or expensive upkeep. Relax, we’ve got it.

We’ve got free classes on a wide array of subjects, including art, fitness, history, writing, etc., taught by college-level instructors. They are smart and meaningful. We’ve also got something no other community in the area can claim — our very own stadium-style performance theatre just steps from your door. The Road Theatre Company puts on dynamic production from up-and-coming writers and actors as well as proven pros.

We’d love for you to stop by for a tour to see for yourself what makes our North Hollywood community so energetic and worthwhile. Call us today at 855 399-5381.

Hops to it. Local places to grab a pint

April 14th, 2022

Things are opening back up open, and it’s time to see those old friends and get reacquainted. The perfect place to do that is over a cold and refreshing libation at a local venue. Some of our favorite local hangouts include Lawless Beer, Brews Brothers Craft Beer, The Fat Dog LA, and Hop Merchants. Don’t you love the fun names?! It’s important to get back to our social lives again after the last few years. Humans are social creatures. It’s good for our well-being to reconnect. Make sure to check with your physician if it is okay to gather in this way and/or consume products containing alcohol. Also, better safe than sorry. Make sure to utilize driver services like Uber and Lyft. You can get the apps and put them on your smartphone, so it’s convenient and easy to use them. For even more cool places near us, including shopping, dining, entertainment, parks, and more, be sure to check out the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Interactive Map. It conveniently plots the address on a map and has a link to get additional information. Cheers to seeing friends again! We’ve missed that so much.

It was a phenomenal year in music with nothing getting in the way of fresh new sounds and iconic favorites. The 2022 Grammys had a stellar list of nominees. The competition was fierce but there were a few stand outs including music powerhouse Jon Baptiste. He is on an endless winning streak for his music, soundtrack compositions, live stage compositions, and lots more. Keep your eye and ears on him. He’s incredibly talented and prolific. You’ll recognize him as the musical director on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. It was also extra heartfelt to see legend Tony Bennett introduce Lady Gaga singing the time-honored jazz hit Love For Sale. Their collaborations together are incredible. Treat yourself and revisit Tony Bennett’s music catalog. What a legacy of music. Speaking of creativity, did you know NoHo Senior Arts Colony has a ton of free classes and programs so you can enjoy your creativity too! That’s just one of the unique amenities at our inspiring independent apartment community for those 62+.

March 28th, 2022

flowers and pollen NoHo Senior Arts Colony

Springtime is allergy time. There’s no avoiding it. A change of seasons is often a catalyst for sniffles and sneezes. Hay fever or other related allergies are common. We’ve found some allergy tips from Yale to help you survive and thrive as the flowers bloom. One thing that is common sense is to make sure your residence is free as possible from dust. So, doing regular vacuuming and cleaning will help a lot. Some folks find air purifiers can help too. But allergies are not limited to Springtime. People are allergic to many things besides pollen. They include pet dander, latex, some medicines, some spices, and foods. You’d be surprised. Set up an appointment with your doctor to take an allergy test and find out what is really giving you the sniffles. You’ll be glad you did. We want you to be at your healthiest and happiest at NoHo Senior Arts Colony to make the most of your carefree and independent life!

Gray is leading the way. Why younger people are embracing going gray.

March 22nd, 2022

smilng women with gray hair NoHo Senior Arts Colony

More and more gray hair is trending. We always knew being a silver fox was extra foxy. But now the world and more women are embarking upon their “gray journey” and stopping dying their hair. Shorter hair styles are even coming back for all ages as people are trimming off the dyed parts and letting their gray hair and edgy new style take center stage. Here’s to letting the gray flag fly! Stopping dying hair has real benefits. Your hair will be in better condition so it will hold moisture better. Your hair will be shinier. You’ll also save money and time. Going to the salon and getting it dyed and roots covered up can be expensive. Young people are even dying their hair all shades of gray. There are so many shades of gorgeous gray, it’s no wonder they are inspired. It’s no wonder they envy our look! You won’t even have to pay a dime. Isn’t that great?! Also, non-dyed hair dries faster too. Even when you towel dry it. The point is for everyone to be comfortable in their own authentic skin (and hair) in this case. So let your gray hair be the star it was meant to be. You’ll always be a shining silver star to us at NoHo Senior Arts Colony.

The time change is coming! What to do with those extra hours of daylight

March 11th, 2022

Spring Forward

Can you believe it’s already time to Spring ahead! At NoHo Senior Arts Colony, we love having more daylight hours. Springtime is such a good opportunity to enjoy a fresh approach to life and a sense of renewal. Things are blooming and so beautiful. With those extra hours of daylight, you can relax by our beautiful pool even longer. Or you could go on a daily walk and get in some easy cardio as you enjoy the fresh air when it’s less warm later in the day. Having more daylight is good for the soul. It just feels better and is inspiring to get more things done and have fun. Staying active is a big deal in our community. With more daylight hours, it’s more motivating. Taking a few 20 minutes naps will help you adjust to “losing an hour” of sleep. Now’s a good time to think about plans for the summer. Maybe go on some road trips to see the grandkids, find some new local trails to hike, pick up a new hobby, take an extension course at a university, head out to the beach more, and the list goes on and on. Whatever you do this Springtime, have fun! Clocks go back one hour on Sunday morning, March 13, 2022.
