Tips on how to write a book

November 19th, 2020

Everyone has a story to share. Writing a book is an incredible way to share one story or many stories. They can be from your own life or complete fiction. Here are some tips to get you started on your writing journey.

CHOOSE A SUBJECT MATTER THAT MATTERS TO YOU: When you have a passionate interest in the subject you’re writing about, it reveals itself and creates compelling reading! So whatever subject you want to write about for your book, make sure it’s one that truly resonates with you.

RESEARCH YOUR SUBJECT: Now’s the time to dive deep into your subject. Thank goodness for the internet. There’s so much information and it’s just a click away. This is one of the most rewarding parts of writing. Once you start, you’ll continue to learn more about your subject and it’s very meaningful.

TALK WITH OTHER AUTHORS: Gather more information from colleagues from writing groups or literary sites on how they started to write their books. Everyone has their own process. It’s good to find out how others have started their books so you can pick and choose what will work for you.

BUY A BOOK ON HOW TO WRITE A BOOK: Search Amazon or wherever you buy books on a book that walks you through the process. There are a ton of books out there to help you. Plus, you can see the reviews if these books were helpful or not so much.
CREATE AN INITIAL OUTLINE FOR YOUR BOOK: This initial outline may get changed a hundred times but do it anyway. It will be helpful to stay focused on the beginning, middle, and end of your book. That way, your book will have a flow that makes sense to you and most importantly, your readers.

FOCUS ON WRITING THE BOOK, NOT PUBLISHING THE BOOK: Publishing is an entirely different thing. The main work is writing the book. Put aside any questions or concerns you may have about publishing and marketing. That can wait. Don’t worry if you are writing the book with pen and paper or on the computer or other smart device. Just get to writing.

WRITE EVERY DAY EVEN IF IT’S FOR ONLY 15 MINUTES: You would be surprised how much writing you get done when you get into a routine. It’s amazing how you can accomplish when you do a little bit of writing every day.
