Irish poet spotlight: Seamus Heaney

March 18th, 2021

The month of March is traditional the time to celebrate all things Irish. Who better to feature than acclaimed Irish poet Seamus Heaney. Born in 1939 in Northern Irelands, Seamus Heaney came from a large, working-class family in the Irish countryside. At St. Columb’s College, he learned Latin which influenced him throughout his entire poetry career. His first published poems were published and seen in the 1960s when he was a young teacher. He then became one of the most influential 20th-century poets in the entire world popular with poetry lovers as well as academics. His belief in the power and effect of poetry never wavered in his career. His poetry has been a favorite of many American Presidents, singer/songwriter Paul Simon, and even today’s popular musicians and artists. Heaney’s work is simple but very deep and honest. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1995. Treat yourself and check out some of his work. April is National Poetry Month so we’re sure you’ll get some inspiration from Seamus and our creative atmosphere at NoHo Senior Arts Colony to write your own poetry.
