Icon spotlight: Billie Holiday
March 31st, 2021
Truly one of a kind, singer Billie Holiday had a voice all her own that she shared with the world. We’ve all heard of her and her albums are favorites in almost every coffee house on the planet. Her fascinating life was not easy facing racism, poverty, and other strife. But her voice changed the world of jazz with her unique vocal interpretations, romantic feel, as well as poignant and controversial songs like Strange Fruit about lynching. Her life was turned into a movie back in 1972 long after her death from years of substance abuse. Lady Sings The Blues starring legendary Diana Ross received rave reviews for its authenticity and powerhouse performances. In 2021, a new movie about Billie has come out called The United States VS Billie Holiday. Lead actress Andra Day won a Golden Globe for best actress in a movie picture. Billie Holiday’s music can be found online at Spotify and for purchase on Amazon and other online venues. If you haven’t listened to her music in a while, make a fresh cup of coffee, and put some Billie on, and enjoy one of the most original voices in the entire world.
